O.P. Sharma a veteran journalist, has numerous articles and special interviews published in various reputed newspapers and magazines in and outside Jammu and Kashmir State.
Born to Shri. Hira Lal Sharma and Tara Devi on February 26, 1939 at Jammu, the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir State, he got his education in Government schools. His parents had dreamed of their son being highly educated and put in all efforts and blessings.
After Graduating from Government Gandhi Memorial Science College, Jammu in 1961 with Physics and Mathematics, had a stint of Government service. Meanwhile he fell in for literary and journalistic work. In 1963-64, he qualified Diploma in Journalism from Punjab University, Chandigarh becoming first or second to have undergone this professional one year course in Journalism. Without having History at the Graduation level, young Sharma did complete M.A. in History during 1964-66 from University of Jammu and Kashmir. He was earning while learning.
He was also actively associated with Mirror, an English weekly, Kashmir Times and Excelsior (both English daily published from Jammu). Started career as Sub-Editor to look after the publicity of the J&K State Health Department in 1966 and subsequently got selected as Assistant Information Officer (Grade-II) during 1970-71 in State Information Department. After another selection by the Recruitment Board became Assistant Information (Grade I).
After getting age bar relaxed appeared in competitive examination held by the Public Service Commission in 1979 and secured second position for Gazetted cadre post of District Information Officer and within three years got promoted as Assistant Director and got posting in Jalandhar, Srinagar/Jammu and New Delhi handling important assignments and sensitive matter.
Immediately after superannuation in February, 1997, he joined Daily Excelsior, a leading newspaper of J&K State as Correspondent from March 1, 1997. He is committed to his profession and still continuing with his passion for writing.
Mr. Sharma is Academic Counselor for Post Graduate Journalism and Mass Communication, one year course of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) at Jammu from 1995.He also has active association with Radio Station and Doordarshan Kendra, Jammu since long.
Presently, Mr. Sharma is now Inspecting Authority with Maulana Azad Education Foundation(MAEF) in the Union Ministry of Minorty affairs. He will be checking records of NGO's/Institutions Seeking grant-in-aid from MAEF and his term is for two fiscal years(upto March-2019)
He was the consultant information in Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University, Katra(J&K).Last year he launched Star-Line Syndicate Service
for the issue of Feature Articles in and outside J&K.
